It’s wonderful to see the positive relationship that this generation of kids have with the Irish language. One thing missing for many of our own generation when it came to learning Irish was a bit of fun, engagement and craic. Thankfully, Irish language education has developed so much over the last few decades and a more light hearted and less dogmatic approach has really done wonders for the future of the language. We all know that kids learn best through fun and we have found a great camp in Cork where fun and Irish go hand in hand!
Many parents can see the benefits of their children having fluency for both academic and career prospects and aside from the practical benefits of learning Irish and plenty of parents also want their children to have a connection to our culture through language- and perhaps to play a part of its revival too. Parents who want to help their children become immersed in the language often send their children off to the Gaeltacht for the summer but there’s no need to pack the suitcases just yet- there is an immersive style Irish speaking summer experience right on our doorstep in Cork!
‘Gníomhach le Gaeilge’ (active with Irish) is a 5- day Irish language Summer Camp, for 5th & 6th class and 1st & 2nd year students. In a fun, positive atmosphere the camp combines Irish conversation classes, sports and drama games, all through the medium of Irish.
This unique summer camp experience is a chance for students with all levels of Irish to dive deep into the language whilst develop friendships and lasting memories. The idea is for kids to have fun in an immersive setting as Gaeilge getting comfortable with the language amongst new friends.
For this age group who are working towards the Leaving Cert, becoming at ease with Irish can really help take the pressure off them at exam time- instead of getting grinds and burning the midnight oil before exams they can absorb Irish naturally and without pressure in a positive environment. The classes for 1st & 2nd year students reinforce & explore Gaeilge needed for the Junior Certificate but as the name indicates, however…they will be gníomhach (active) throughout!
One of the students from last years summer camp shares her experience
“I loved this camp, went when I was in second year and had a fab time. It wasn’t like school in any way, the teachers made it fun and enjoyable while also making it a very interesting learning experience! Definitely recommend to everyone that wants to give the Gaeilge a go!”
So if you are looking for a fun, active and memorable Irish summer experience for your kids this is the camp for you! There are just a few spaces remaining and we recommend booking early to avoid disappointment.
