Breastfeeding is the best start for your baby. If you are planning on breastfeeding it is important to get support before you have your baby. Ireland has some of the lowest rates of breastfeeding in the world. It is said that a woman doesn’t breastfeed, a culture does- this is perhaps why so many women in Ireland give up in the early days, it is a learned skill and requires support from people who have gone before us and unfortunately we don’t have a lot of people in the generation before us to support and coach us when we face problems. Things are changing and we are becoming more open to and accepting as a society of breastfeeding. We have some incredible groups such as La Leche League and Cuidiu who have regular meetings to offer support to new moms and women feeding beyond infancy as well. Having a tribe around us when breastfeeding is so important so please reach out if you want the support or if you want to be a support or an example of success to other moms! You can also find a list of Lactation Consultants here who are trained professionals that can help you with issues you may be facing when breastfeeding your baby.
